Mumbai, July 1 (IANS) Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis praised Sachin Ahir for his unopposed election as the Maharashtra Legislative Council Deputy Chairman, stating that since he was trained under the mentorship of veteran leader Sharad Pawar, he knows exactly when to “score a goal” and possesses the ability to make the right decision at the right time.

CM Fadnavis thanked the Opposition for withdrawing their nomination for the Deputy Chairman’s post.

“Sachin Ahir and I were elected together in 1999. The literal meaning of the word ‘Ahir’ is a cowherd and someone who is fearless. Based on my personal experience with him, he is indeed a fearless worker,” he remarked.

He added that anyone occupying the Deputy Chairman’s chair is expected to deliver justice to everyone, and expressed confidence that Sachin Ahir would do so.

The CM also congratulated Neelam Gorhe, who previously served as the Deputy Chairperson, praising her for taking firm stands and performing remarkably well during recent times of political conflict.

CM Fadnavis said Sachin Ahir’s career path is widely recognised as that of a leader born out of grassroots movements.

He has actively worked for labourers and served as an office-bearer of the Mill Mazdoor Sabha.

He became an MLA in the Legislative Assembly in 1999 and went on to win three consecutive terms, later serving as a Minister of State in 2009.

He reminisced that “Sachin Bhau” was known as a minister who always provided apt and precise answers, often asking, “What are your expectations?” whenever a crucial issue arose.

The Chief Minister also highlighted Ahir’s famous Dahi Handi events and his notable contributions to the social sector, reiterating his shrewdness in making timely decisions.

Taking a swipe at Uddhav Thackeray, the Chief Minister pointed out that Sachin Ahir wanted to contest the 2019 elections. However, following the leadership’s wishes, both Ahir and Sunil Shinde refrained from contesting from the Worli constituency.

CM Fadnavis certified the election by confirming that Sachin Ahir’s appointment has been carried out in a completely legal manner.

“When he entered the House, he came under the ‘Bow and Arrow’ symbol. Therefore, no technical change has occurred,” Fadnavis stated.

He recalled how Opposition objections were handled when Neelam Gorhe became Deputy Chairman, expecting that since the Opposition already knew the answers to those legalities, they would not raise any objections regarding Sachin Ahir’s appointment.
