Sachin Pilot calls for all-party meet on women’s reservation, stresses on Constitution’s relevance

Jaipur, April 14 (IANS) Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Tuesday emphasised the enduring relevance of the Constitution and called for an all-party meeting to deliberate on the issue of women’s reservation.

Speaking to the media at the Rajasthan Congress office on the occasion of B.R. Ambedkar’s birth anniversary, Pilot said that his contribution to the nation remains unparalleled.

He noted that despite challenging social conditions, Dr. Ambedkar, through years of dedication and scholarship, crafted a Constitution that continues to guide the country.

He expressed concern that in the present times, the spirit and provisions of the Constitution are often disregarded.

Pilot urged those in positions of power to reflect on whether they are truly adhering to constitutional values.

He remarked that mere symbolic reverence for the Constitution is not enough, and actions must align with its principles to fulfill the vision of Babasaheb Ambedkar.

Highlighting the Congress’ commitment to constitutional ideals, Pilot said that the party has always treated the Constitution as a sacred document that ensures inclusivity and justice for all.

Referring to women’s reservation, the Congress leader added that under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi and the UPA government led by former Prime Minister late Manmohan Singh, a Bill proposing one-third reservation for women was introduced but could not be passed at the time.

While welcoming the intent behind the current Bill introduced by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Pilot stressed that procedural integrity must be maintained.

He pointed out concerns regarding potential delays linked to delimitation and Census processes.

In this context, Pilot called for an all-party meeting to discuss women’s reservation in detail and build consensus across political parties.

He emphasised that the matter requires comprehensive deliberation within the House.

Raising broader governance issues, Pilot alleged that the current Union government is showing indifference towards public concerns and democratic institutions.

He criticised delays in Panchayat elections and disruptions in NREGA work, saying that administrative inaction is adversely affecting people at the grassroots level.

He also alleged that key local body positions such as Sarpanch, Councillor, and Mayor are being left vacant due to political considerations.

Referring to concerns about women’s safety, Pilot said that if such incidents occur in Jaipur, the situation in other districts of Rajasthan can be imagined, and urged the state government to prioritise law and order.

He also underlined the need for administrative autonomy, saying that officials must be allowed to function without political interference.

He noted that many announcements made in the Rajasthan Assembly have not translated into action on the ground.

Commenting on the Assembly elections in four states and one Union Territory, Pilot said that high voter turnout in Kerala reflects a desire for change.

He expressed confidence that the Congress will perform strongly in Assam and asserted that people across the country are seeking an alternative to the current state government there.
