New Delhi, May 18 (IANS) IAS officer Saurabh Vijay assumed charge as the Chief Executive Officer of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on Monday, an official statement said.

A civil engineer from IIT-Delhi, he is a 1998 batch officer of the Maharashtra cadre, and has held several key positions in both the Maharashtra and Central governments, it said.

Vijay was Principal Secretary, Expenditure, in Maharashtra’s Finance Department, prior to joining the UIDAI. His earlier assignments in the state included Principal Secretary, Planning and Development Commissioner, Principal Secretary, Tourism, Secretary, Medical Education, Secretary, Higher and Technical Education, among others.

He has served on central deputation in significant national and international roles, including as Director at the President’s Secretariat in New Delhi, and Advisor to the Executive Director for Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, and Sri Lanka at the World Bank in Washington, D.C.

Meanwhile, the UIDAI has announced that the free online Aadhaar document update service on the myAadhaar portal will continue. Aadhaar holders can update their documents on their UID card at no cost through the myAadhaar portal until June 14, the UIDAI said in an office memorandum/

The office memorandum also states that this extension comes after a positive response from Aadhaar cardholders who have been updating their information online.

In an update posted on X, the UIDAI has also notified that the mAadhaar app will be retired soon, and Aadhaar holders can now download the new Aadhaar app. The new app offers features such as secure QR-based Aadhaar sharing, enhanced privacy controls and seamless access to Aadhaar services, making the digital identity experience simpler and more convenient.

The online service, which used to charge a fee, is now available for free until June 14, 2027, but only through the myAadhaar portal.

“It has been decided to extend the facility for one more year, i.e., from June 15, 2026, to June 14, 2027. Accordingly, the facility for document update shall continue to be free of cost through myAadhaar portal at https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/ up to June 14, 2027, the office memo said.
