THUNDERSTORMS could hit today followed by an extreme heatwave as temperatures reach 35 degrees in parts of the Sunshine Coast.
A high-pressure system parked off the east coast will send the mercury up to midsummer levels.
Daytime maximums could be 10 degrees above average.
Forecasters have warned of 90kmh winds across the Gympie region, while there is the threat of severe storms on the Coast this afternoon and evening.
There is a 70% change of rain today but no chance across the weekend.
It could get to 33 in Maroochydore on Monday, while in Nambour it will be 32 on Saturday, 34 on Sunday and 35 on Monday.
“It’s looking ugly,” Queensland based weather service Higgins Storm Chasing said.
“The forecast will be overrun with extreme heat during the weekend and into early next week.
