Jammu, June 6 (IANS) A Station House Officer (SHO) is among four policemen suspended on Saturday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Samba district over the alleged mishandling of a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) case.

Official sources said that in a major disciplinary action underscoring a zero-tolerance approach towards alleged lapses in handling crimes against children, Samba Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Anuj Kumar, has ordered the suspension of four police personnel, including the Ramgarh Police Station SHO, over allegations of facilitating a compromise in a case registered under the POCSO Act.

The SSP has also ordered a detailed investigation into the allegations to establish the facts and determine accountability in the handling of the sensitive case, sources said.

In a related development, a Special Police Officer (SPO) has also been transferred to the Goran Police Station.

The action follows complaints regarding the manner in which the POCSO case was allegedly handled, prompting the district police leadership to initiate immediate corrective measures and an internal probe.

Sources said the inquiry will examine all aspects of the allegations and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings.

The POCSO Act, 2012, is India’s primary legislation protecting anyone under 18 years from sexual abuse, exploitation, and pornography.

It is gender-neutral, prioritises the child’s emotional safety, and mandates Special Courts for speedy trials.

Key aspects of the legislation include: Definition of a Child (Any person under the age of 18).

Anyone, including medical and school staff, who knows an offence has occurred is legally required to report it to the police or a Special Juvenile Police Unit.

Statements are recorded in the child’s presence (not in the accused’s), avoiding face-to-face contact during trials to prevent trauma.

Provisions of the act include strict punishments (up to life imprisonment or the death penalty for aggravated offences) and covers physical, sexual, and online/electronic harassment.

Rehabilitation process as per the POCSO Act ensures that victims receive medical care, counselling and compensation.
