Guwahati, May 13 (IANS) Atul Bora, a senior Assam Cabinet Minister and president of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), on Wednesday said that resolving Assam’s long-pending border disputes with neighbouring northeastern states remains one of the key priorities of the BJP-led NDA government in the state.

Speaking to reporters here, Bora said the government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has already made significant progress in addressing inter-state boundary disputes through dialogue and mutual cooperation with neighbouring states.

He said Assam had faced border-related tensions for decades, causing hardship and uncertainty for people residing in the affected areas.

According to Bora, the present government initiated a fresh and proactive approach soon after Sarma assumed office as Chief Minister. “After becoming Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma took the initiative to hold discussions with all northeastern Chief Ministers. He clearly stated that such disputes should be resolved through talks and mutual understanding. As a result, Assam has achieved major progress in resolving border disputes with neighbouring states,” Bora said.

The AGP leader pointed out that Assam has already reached important agreements with Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya regarding several disputed areas.

He added that discussions were also held regularly with Mizoram and Nagaland over border-related issues and incidents occurring in sensitive areas.

Bora acknowledged that the dispute with Nagaland remains a complicated matter as parts of the issue are pending before the Supreme Court. However, he expressed confidence that continued dialogue between the neighbouring states would eventually help find a peaceful solution.

“We believe that through discussions and cooperation, solutions can be found. Considerable progress has already been achieved, and we are hopeful of moving further ahead in the coming years,” he said.

Bora also stated that the people of Assam have once again shown trust in the NDA government and that the ruling alliance would work with greater responsibility to fulfil public expectations in the next five years.

He said the government would continue prioritising development, protection of Assam’s interests and welfare measures across sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture and infrastructure.
