South Delhi horror: Doctor accused of killing maid sent to 2-day police custody

New Delhi, June 19 (IANS) Investigators on Friday continued to review the CCTV footage of colony cameras and record statements of relatives and neighbours of a Delhi doctor who allegedly murdered his maid in south Delhi’s Mount Kailash while a city court sent the suspect to two-day police custody.

Dermatologist Manish Gupta, who was arrested from close to the body of his 45-year-old domestic help Meena on the terrace on Thursday, is likely to face police grilling over the motive behind the brutal killing for which he allegedly used a cricket bat and a sharp-edged weapon, an official said.

While seeking his custody, the police told the Saket Court that they needed to question the 50-year-old doctor to make recoveries and investigate the reported differences between the doctor and his wife over retaining Meena in the job.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Hemand Tiwari earlier told reporters that Gupta’s wife did not want to sack Meena despite her husband’s insistence as the maid had taken good care of her mother-in-law during her battle with cancer.

Gupta’s advocate Kamal Nayan Tiwari told IANS on Friday that in the Saket Court he opposed the police application seeking his remand on the grounds that all recoveries had already been made Thursday night and there was no need for further recovery in the case.

Tiwari said Gupta was suffering from an ailment for a long time.

“The matter will come up in court after the end of two-day remand of Gupta,” he added.

The Amar Colony police station had received a phone call around 11:35 a.m. on Thursday about a woman’s murder and her body lying in a pool of blood on the terrace.

The police rushed to the spot and took Gupta into custody.

At the time of the incident, Gupta’s wife, who is also a doctor, was not at home while his 20-year-old son was present there.

The police have ruled out any role of the doctor’s son in the incident.

Gupta, who has been undergoing treatment for depression for almost a decade, did not reportedly make any attempt to escape from the crime spot, the police said.

Colony residents said they could hear loud noises of someone shouting on the terrace till some time before the incident, the police added.

While Meena’s body was sent for post-mortem to find out the exact cause of death, investigators on Friday recorded statements of other domestic help and Gupta’s family members and neighbours in connection with the incident to corroborate the chain of events.
