SP questions Bengal mandate, expresses confidence for 2027 Uttar Pradesh polls

Lucknow, May 5 (IANS) Leaders of the Samajwadi Party (SP) on Tuesday questioned the outcome of the West Bengal Assembly elections, alleging electoral malpractice, while asserting that the party is gearing up strongly for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh polls.

SP MP Krishna Devi Patel alleged that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) was poised to win but was defeated due to irregularities.

“The Trinamool Congress could have won and formed the government, but the BJP has engaged in vote rigging and won through fraud,” she said.

She also rejected allegations of corruption against the TMC, claiming that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured victory through unfair means.

“There was no corruption there, as they alleged. BJP won through cheating. But this won’t work in Uttar Pradesh,” Patel added.

Expressing confidence about her party’s political future in Uttar Pradesh, she said the Samajwadi Party is well-prepared for the upcoming electoral battle.

“We are ready for 2027 Uttar Pradesh polls and are confident that the Samajwadi Party will form the government in the state,” she asserted.

Echoing similar sentiments, SP spokesperson Fakhrul Hasan Chand said, “Every political party has the right to contest elections, and the Congress also contested elections there. It is true that Akhilesh Yadav has always been in favour of like-minded parties coming together on one platform and contesting elections jointly.”

Emphasising the importance of Opposition unity, Chand called on the Congress to play a more supportive role.

He added that the SP has demonstrated political generosity in Uttar Pradesh by accommodating allies.

“For this, in Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav and the Samajwadi Party have made great sacrifices with a big heart. Therefore, the Congress should also enter elections with a big heart. The Congress is a major national party and should fulfill its responsibility by strengthening regional parties,” he said referring to West Bengal.

Raising concerns over the conduct of the elections, Chand also questioned the role of the Election Commission.

“Look at the way the elections were conducted. The Samajwadi Party believes that in a democracy, democracy should remain strong. There are questions in some places, especially regarding Bengal. There are major questions about the role of the Election Commission and its statements. There are many issues and concerns about the misuse of agencies,” he said.

The remarks come amid a broader political debate over Opposition unity and electoral transparency, with political parties increasingly focusing on strategy and alliances ahead of crucial state elections in 2027.
