Indigenous protesters have stopped the Commonwealth Games baton relay passing through the Spit at Southport.
About 50 protesters blocked the road after noon on Wednesday, holding banners and signs and speaking to supporters, who encouraged them to continue their blockade.
The protesters were opposed to the Commonwealth Games – which they referred to as the “Stolenweath Games “- being hosted by the Gold Coast and asked that Prince Charles speak to traditional owners upon his arrival.
The Prince and the Duchess of Cornwall had touched down in Brisbane minutes earlier, where they would spend several hours before attending the Games opening ceremony on Wednesday evening.
Standing in silence but using clapping sticks, the protesters blocked both the path of the Commonwealth Games bus that was carrying several baton bearers as well as the entrance to Doug Jennings Park.
They refused a request from police negotiators to move to let the bus through.
About 40 police were in attendance, with medical officers on standby.
