Malaysia will head into competition as the nation to beat, having won the past three consecutive gold medals in the team event, but they’ll have strong competition in India, who will take to the courts at Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre as the top seed.
The knockout stage of the competition will see each nation play all other teams in their group, with the top two progressing to the knockout stage to play for medals. The group competition will run from 5-6 April with the knockout stage taking place from 7-9 April.
GC2018 Multicultural Community Ambassador, Wai Kiong Chan hosted the draw announcement event and shared the Malaysian community’s excitement about the Games.
“The Malaysian community is extremely excited about Badminton. Out of all the sports at GC2018, Badminton is one that the community is so excited about because the sport itself is so popular in Malaysia. It’s like Cricket or Rugby League here. They grow up with it,” he said.
“It’s great that the Commonwealth Games brings everyone together as there are so many other countries from various regions of the Commonwealth taking part.”
GOLDOC CEO Mark Peters was also looking forward to the competition and expected the Badminton competition to draw widespread interest across the world.
““Badminton is a sport that has true global reach and we will see some of the world’s best in action at these Games,” he said.
“Along with those packing the stands at Carrara, Badminton is sure to draw huge television audiences in Asia, which is one of the sport’s strongholds.
“I look forward to seeing nations such as Malaysia, India, England and Singapore going head-to-head along with host nation Australia and other emerging Badminton countries.”
