Bhubaneswar, June 30 (IANS) A man was brutally stabbed to death by three bike-borne assailants in Odisha’s Sundargarh district, while one of the accused was killed in a road accident in the early hours of Monday during an attempt to flee after the crime, a senior police official said on Tuesday.

The murder occurred under Talsara police station area in the said district during the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.

As per the police official, the victim, Shivdhan Lohar of Chaingada in Ranchi (Jharkhand), along with his friend Anmol Mallik, a resident of Talsara in Sundargarh district, had brought a patient to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Sundargarh for treatment on Sunday evening.

The official also added that Anmol and Shivdhan were returning from Sundargarh to Talsara in a Scorpio SUV and a Maruti Alto, respectively, when they were chased by three bike-borne miscreants.

The incident occurred on the stretch between Subdega and Talsara Chowk around midnight on Monday. The three bike-borne assailants first tried to stop the Scorpio vehicle carrying Anmol but he did not stop and went towards Talsara. However, all the bike-borne assailants succeeded in intercepting the victim Shivdhan’s car near Talsara. They later dragged him out of the car and snatched away his wallet and mobile phone after assaulting him with a knife.

The three accused allegedly forced Shivdhan back into the car and drove to the Duduka railway overbridge, where they stabbed the victim multiple times before dumping his body into a stream near the overbridge.

When the assailants were proceeding towards Bhedabahal area in the victim’s Alto car, the vehicle met with an accident and overturned on the side of coal corridor road near Khamarbahal in early morning of Monday.

Upon being informed, the Bhasma Police station staff rushed to the accident spot and shifted the injured persons to District Headquarters Hospital in Sundargarh.

One of the accused, Suvendu Sekhar Majhi, who sustained grievous injuries, died at the spot while another injured accused Bhumeswar Behera was shifted to a hospital in Rourkela.

Meanwhile, a juvenile accused who had sustained minor injury has been apprehended in the case.

The police officers also seized the weapon of offence (knife) and the Alto Car looted by the miscreants.
