Chennai, April 3 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday unveiled its list of candidates for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections, naming nominees for 27 constituencies as part of the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The announcement, made by the party’s national leadership, signals a calibrated strategy by the BJP to strengthen its presence in the state by fielding prominent leaders in electorally significant constituencies.

Among the names, former Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan has been nominated from the prestigious Mylapore constituency in Chennai. Known for her strong political background in Tamil Nadu, her candidature is expected to add weight to the NDA’s campaign in the urban belt.

BJP Tamil Nadu unit president Nainar Nagenthran will contest from Sattur, a constituency where the party hopes to consolidate its organisational base and expand its electoral footprint in the southern region.

In Coimbatore North, the party has fielded Vanathi Srinivasan, the BJP’s National Mahila Morcha president and a prominent face of the party in Tamil Nadu politics and a sitting MLA. Her candidature is seen as part of the BJP’s effort to retain and strengthen its influence in the Kongu region, which is considered crucial in the state’s electoral landscape.

Union Minister of State L. Murugan has been nominated from the reserved constituency of Avinashi, underlining the party’s focus on leveraging central leadership to boost its prospects in key segments.

Party sources indicated that the selection of candidates reflects a balance between experience, grassroots connections, and social representation, aligning with the broader NDA strategy in Tamil Nadu.

The BJP is contesting as a key ally in the AIADMK-led alliance, aiming to improve its strike rate compared to previous elections.

The release of the list comes at a crucial juncture, with election campaigning entering an intense phase across the state, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself leading the campaign in Tamil Nadu in the evening.

Political observers note that the BJP’s choice of candidates indicates a targeted approach, focusing on constituencies where the alliance believes it can mount a strong challenge.

With the electoral battle heating up, the announcement is expected to energise party workers and set the stage for high-voltage campaigning in the days ahead.
