Mumbai, June 9 (IANS) Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma on Tuesday called upon the tribal community to play an active role in nation-building by achieving progress through education, skill development, innovation and self-reliance.

He was speaking at a programme organised to mark the 126th martyrdom anniversary of tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda.

Governor Varma said that in his short life of just 25 years, Birsa Munda brought about social, cultural and political awakening.

“His struggle against superstition, addiction, social evils and divisive forces continues to inspire people even today,” he added.

Saying that both the Central and state governments are making continuous efforts for the holistic development of tribal communities, the Governor said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to tribal welfare has enabled tribal communities to advance in the fields of education, employment and economic empowerment.

Education, Governor Varma added, is the greatest force that makes an individual self-reliant and capable.

“The state government provides free hostels, meals and other facilities for tribal students, and parents should encourage their children, especially girls, to pursue higher education.”

Praising the glorious legacy of the Gondwana kingdom and its rulers in Indian history, Governor Varma said that tribal communities should regain that glory through education, skill development and economic prosperity.

He also stressed the need for concerted efforts to eliminate malnutrition, illness and addiction from society.

The Governor told that the Tribal Development Department has been directed to prepare a comprehensive action plan for preserving tribal art, dance and music.

He also said that the Tribal Research and Training Institute (TRTI) has been instructed to document the history, culture, traditions and knowledge systems of tribal communities across the country.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that Birsa Munda, a great revolutionary leader, shook the foundations of British rule during his brief life of 25 years.

“His sacrifice continues to inspire tribal communities with values of self-respect, struggle and patriotism.”

He added that at a time when tribal rights over water, forests and land were being taken away under British rule, Birsa Munda ignited a revolution against injustice.

“The movement he led posed a major challenge to colonial rule. Besides leading an armed struggle, he also united and awakened tribal communities.”

He reiterated the state government’s commitment to preserving tribal culture and ensuring the all-round development of tribal communities through education, healthcare, employment and welfare initiatives.

He added that all such efforts are inspired by the struggle, determination and sacrifice of Birsa Munda.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that several initiatives are being implemented for tribal students, including smart Ashram schools, opportunities for higher education, guidance for medical and engineering admissions, Ph.D. scholarships and financial assistance for overseas education.

The state government is ensuring that tribal youth are not deprived of educational opportunities, he added.

He said that the state government is promoting industrial development in remote areas such as Gadchiroli to create employment opportunities.

Bringing tribal communities into the mainstream is a collective responsibility of both the government and society, he added.

Maharashtra Tribal Development Minister Ashok Uike said that many talented individuals from tribal communities had not received adequate opportunities in the past.

“Due to government initiatives, they now have a platform to showcase their art, ideas and traditions to a wider audience.”
