Trinamool begins vacating temporary EM Bypass headquarters in Kolkata

Kolkata, June 17 (IANS) The Trinamool Congress has begun vacating a rented building on Eastern Metropolitan Bypass in east Kolkata, which served as its temporary party headquarters.

The process of shifting started on Tuesday night, with furniture and equipment being removed from the first and second floors. The party is now expected to shift its headquarters to a new location.

Eyewitnesses claimed that several goods-laden vehicles were seen parked in front of the Trinamool building since Tuesday night. The vehicles left with the goods in the morning.

The building where the Trinamool headquarters was located is owned by Monotosh Saha, also known as Montu Saha. Montu’s company, ‘Modern Decorating’, used to handle stage constructions for all Trinamool events until the recently concluded Assembly elections. Even the stage at Esplanade in central Kolkata on July 21 for Trinamool’s Martyrs’ Day programme was built by Modern Decorating.

However, after the Assembly election results, the relations between Montu and Trinamool Congress deteriorated. Montu asked party leaders to leave the building and vacate the floors. He claimed that Trinamool did not vacate the building despite repeated requests.

Earlier, Montu had informed that he had approached the Pragati Maidan police station regarding this. After that, Trinamool’s Beleghata MLA Kunal Ghosh and state president Chandrima Bhattacharya also went to the police station. They submitted the rent receipts and other documents to the police station. According to Trinamool sources, the party had an agreement with Montu until 2027 to use the building. But Montu changed his mind after Trinamool’s defeat in the Assembly elections.

The first floor of the building was used for seating for workers from the district. There was a media centre on the second floor. The work of removing chairs, tables, flex, and backdrops from those two floors began last night.

After the 2021 Assembly elections, the demolition of the old Trinamool building on the Eastern Metropolitan bypass in Uttar Panchannagram area and the construction of a new one began. Since then, this five-story building in the same area has been used as a temporary Trinamool headquarters.

Meanwhile, the renovation work of the old Trinamool building is yet to be completed. Speculation is rife that the Trinamool headquarters will be temporarily shifted somewhere else.
