Kolkata, June 4 (IANS) The Regent Park Police Station under Kolkata Police, on Thursday, arrested Biswajit Mondal, a Trinamool Congress Councillor from Ward No. 114 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).

He was arrested in connection with a 2024 incident in Regent Park, Kolkata, involving the harassment and assault of a woman.

With the arrest of Mondal, a three-time Councillor, the total number of arrested Trinamool Councillors in KMC in the last three days, under various charges, mostly corruption and extortion, has risen to four.

Insiders from the city police said that the victim woman accused Mondal of molesting and sexually harassing her twice, first in March 2024 and on May 9 this year. She had also accused Mondal of using obscene language and threatening her.

She has also alleged that when, for the first time, she was sexually assaulted by Mondal, she approached the police then also. However, she claimed, at that point in time no action was initiated against the arrested councillor because of his association with the ruling party in the state.

After he repeated the same offence last month, she again approached the Regent Park Police Station. This time her complaint was registered, an investigation was initiated, and finally Mondal was arrested on Thursday morning.

In the last three days, a total of four Trinamool Congress Councillors in KMC have been arrested under various charges, mainly corruption and extortion.

First, on June 2, the Trinamool Congress Councillors from ward numbers 36 and 106, Sachin Singh and Arjit Das, respectively, were arrested on charges of corruption and extortion.

On the night of June 3, Trinamool Congress Councillor of ward number 42 of the KMC, Mahesh Kumar Sharma, was arrested on the same charges of corruption and extortion.

In another major development concerning the party, on Wednesday, former Minister Firhad Hakim resigned as the Mayor of KMC. According to Trinamool Congress sources, he took the decision after taking permission from party supremo and former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

On Wednesday, several Trinamool MLAs reached the state secretariat Nabanna to attend an administrative meeting at the invitation of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Among them was Kolkata Port MLA Firhad Hakim, who resigned from the post of Mayor of Kolkata after returning from there.
