Trinamool facing consequences of its own actions: Khagen Murmu rejects BJP’s role in attack on Abhishek Banerjee

New Delhi, June 1 (IANS) MP Khagen Murmu on Monday rejected allegations linking the BJP to the recent attack on Trinamool Congress MP, Abhishek Banerjee, asserting that the party had no involvement in the incident and attributing it instead to growing public resentment against the former ruling party’s leaders in West Bengal.

Reacting to the controversy, Murmu claimed the BJP neither indulges in nor supports such activities. He alleged that the ruling Trinamool Congress had a long history of political violence and intimidation in the state.

“This kind of drama is not something the BJP does, nor has it ever done. But if you look at the Trinamool Congress, for the last 15 years it has engaged in such politics and has even attacked ordinary people. Therefore, TMC should face the consequences of its actions today,” Murmu said.

The BJP MP further alleged that several Trinamool leaders were facing public anger due to corruption and violence during the party’s tenure in power.

“We have been saying for a long time that many of these people were involved in corruption, violence and wrongdoing. They looted public resources. There were attacks on women, incidents of rape and murders. Because of all this, no Trinamool Congress leader can escape accountability today. The media is now exposing these realities, and people are reacting to them. Even Trinamool workers have often been involved in hooliganism,” he said.

Murmu reiterated that the BJP had already clarified that the party had no connection with the incident. “Our party leadership has made it clear that BJP has no involvement. If anyone associated with the party is found engaging in such misconduct or hooliganism, strict action will be taken,” he added.

Meanwhile, comments from other BJP leaders further intensified the political exchange.

Earlier in the day, Bengal minister Dilip Ghosh said, “Everyone has seen what happened. No one hit or pushed him; it was merely drama. I have seen such behaviour in Parliament as well as elsewhere. Many people have complained about his conduct. What we are witnessing now is public anger, and he should be cautious about his own safety.”

Bihar minister Ram Kripal Yadav also blamed public dissatisfaction with the ruling party in West Bengal for the incidents involving Trinamool leaders.

“The misdeeds committed by TMC leaders, the atrocities they have carried out and the corruption they have been involved in have angered the people of West Bengal. That is why some people, out of anger, are throwing objects at Abhishek Banerjee, and Kalyan Banerjee, too, is facing the consequences of this public resentment,” Yadav said.

Trinamool National General Secretary and MP, Abhishek Banerjee, was allegedly attacked during a visit to Sonarpur in West Bengal on May 30, where he had gone to meet families affected by post-poll violence.

Protesters reportedly hurled stones, eggs and shoes at his convoy, while his shirt was torn and his spectacles damaged during the confrontation.
