Kolkata, June 14 (IANS) Rezaul Khan, the former Trinamool Congress president of Indpur block in Bankura district, has been arrested by the police on charges of assaulting a BJP worker and allegedly molesting his wife.

A senior officer of the Bankura district police said on Sunday that the arrest was made on the basis of a complaint lodged by the BJP worker.

The BJP worker alleged that Rezaul attacked him at his residence and assaulted him. He further alleged that the Trinamool Congress leader molested his wife, vandalised the house and threatened to kill the family by showing them firearms.

According to the police, officers of Indpur police station arrested Rezaul on Saturday night on the basis of the complaint. The arrested person was produced before the Khatra Sub-Divisional Court in Bankura on Sunday. The court remanded him to three days of police custody.

After the BJP came to power in the state by displacing the Trinamool Congress government, leaders of the Trinamool Congress have been arrested one after another across the state on various charges, including extortion, corruption and molestation. The same has happened in Bankura as well. The arrest of Rezaul is the latest in the list of Trinamool Congress leaders to be arrested by the police.

The complainant said that before the Assembly elections this time, he had raised several allegations of corruption against Rezaul. For this, he had to face the wrath of the Trinamool Congress leader.

The complaint alleged that Rezaul, accompanied by a few miscreants, attacked his house a few days before the elections. Apart from vandalising the property, the complainant’s wife was allegedly molested. He also allegedly threatened to kill the entire family by showing them firearms.

The police of Indpur police station took action after receiving the written complaint.

Arrested Rezaul did not comment on the allegations against him.

However, his lawyer, Chanchal Roy, told media persons: “After the change of government in the state, a complaint alleging assault at gunpoint has been filed against my client. Everyone understands that there is a political motive behind this case. We had applied for bail. The court rejected the bail application and sent Rezaul Khan to three days of police custody.”
