Kolkata, May 25 (IANS) Trinamool Congress General Secretary of Alipurduar district, Dulal Dey, was arrested on charges of beating up a BJP leader Lakshmi Das, said the police on Monday. The injured BJP leader is undergoing treatment at Alipurduar District Hospital while the police arrested Dulal on the basis of a written complaint filed in Kamakhyaguri of Kumargram block on Sunday night.

The BJP alleged that when Lakshmi Das went to the Customer Service Point of Dulal’s daughter’s bank for a Direct Benefit Transfer link, the two got into an argument.

Allegedly, Dulal and his daughter beat up Lakshmi. The injured BJP leader was first taken to Kamakhyaguri Rural Hospital for treatment and later she was shifted to Alipurduar District Hospital.

A complaint was filed with the police and Dulal Dey was arrested on Monday.

Meanwhile, a BJP worker was attacked with a sharp weapon in Malda district’s Chanchal area in north Bengal. According to the police, the name of the injured BJP worker is Kiran Saha. He is a lawyer by profession at Chanchal Subdistrict Court and he is also an active BJP worker.

It is alleged that on Monday morning, while he was returning from the market, several miscreants came and started attacking him with sharp weapons. The injured BJP worker fell to the ground with blood flowing from his wounds.

Locals rescued him and took him to Chanchal Super Speciality Hospital. From there, he was shifted to Malda Medical College and Hospital.

The BJP worker alleged, “A few months ago, there was an allegation of public harassment of a woman in the area. I protested against that incident. Later, I also filed a written complaint against the accused Habibur Rahman at the police station.”

The BJP worker claimed that this attack was carried out due to previous animosity over the incident.

In protest against the attack, BJP activists blocked the Ashapur state road. They staged a protest there and blocked the road by burning tyres.

A large police force reached the spot to bring the situation under control.

According to police sources, the police have arrested the accused. An investigation has been started into the incident. However, the exact reason for the attack is still not clear.
