Twisha death: Accused Samarth Singh questioned, police say each claim being verified

Bhopal, May 25 (IANS) Samarth Singh, the prime accused in the alleged dowry death case of model-turned-actor Twisha Sharma, was questioned in Bhopal on Monday. Bhopal Police Commissioner Sanjay Singh said that each of his claims is verified.

Responding to media queries, the Police Commissioner said the questioning process was taking longer because every statement made by the accused was being cross-checked as part of the ongoing investigation.

“Any accused individual will naturally try to evade arrest in his own manner. Therefore, the interrogation process is time-consuming because every statement he makes has to be verified concurrently,” Singh said.

When asked where Samarth Singh had remained hidden for nearly ten days after Twisha Sharma was found dead on May 12, the Police Commissioner declined to reveal details, saying the matter formed part of the ongoing investigation.

Samarth Singh, husband of the 33-year-old actor, was taken into custody from the premises of the Jabalpur District Court on Friday after his alleged attempt to surrender failed. He was subsequently brought to Bhopal late Friday night and produced before a local court on Saturday, which remanded him to seven days of police custody.

On the role of Samarth’s mother, Giribala Singh, the Commissioner said preliminary questioning had already taken place, while interrogation on several other issues was still pending. He also confirmed that a police team had visited her residence as part of the probe.

Responding to allegations regarding possible interference in the investigation, Singh asserted that no tampering had taken place with the case file.

On the Central Bureau of Investigation probe, the Commissioner said the case diary would be handed over once the CBI team formally assumed charge. “Until then, the Bhopal police would continue with the investigation,” he added.

The Madhya Pradesh government has already recommended a CBI inquiry into Twisha Sharma’s death.

Twisha Sharma was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Katara Hills on May 12, and her body was cremated in Bhopal after the second autopsy was done by a team of doctors from AIIMS Delhi on Sunday.
