Patna, July 8 (IANS) A case of double murder has occurred in Bihar’s Samastipur district, where two men were shot dead in an indiscriminate firing incident late Tuesday night.

The attack took place in Namapur village under the Chakmehsi police station area, triggering panic among local residents.

The deceased have been identified as Prabhat Chaudhary, a resident of Nima Chakhaidar village, and Sunny Kumar, a resident of Belsandi village.

Both villages fall under the jurisdiction of the Chakmehsi police station.

According to eyewitnesses, Prabhat Chaudhary and Sunny Kumar were standing in a secluded part of Namapur village when a group of 8-10 unidentified bike-borne assailants allegedly emerged from hiding and opened indiscriminate fire.

Both men sustained multiple gunshot injuries and died on the spot.

The attackers fled the scene under the cover of darkness before local residents arrived after hearing the gunfire.

Police reached the spot soon after receiving information, took possession of the bodies, and sent them for post-mortem examinations.

Investigators have launched a probe and are examining CCTV footage from the village and nearby roads to identify and trace the attackers.

Prabhat Chaudhary had previously faced several criminal cases, including those related to alleged illegal liquor smuggling and violations of the Arms Act.

Officials suspect the killings may be linked to a dispute over financial dealings in the illicit liquor trade or a rivalry for local dominance.

However, police have not officially confirmed any motive, stating that all angles are under investigation.

Prabhat’s father, Sanjay Chaudhary, alleged that his son was lured out of the house through a phone call before the attack.

“Prabhat was lured out by a phone call as part of a conspiracy. He had previously survived a life-threatening attack inside the court premises in 2023, in connection with which two police personnel were suspended. This time, he was shot dead,” he said.

According to the family, Prabhat had left home around 7:00 p.m., and they believed he had gone out for routine work until they later received news of his death.

Police are collecting forensic and technical evidence, including CCTV footage and other leads, to identify those involved in the shooting.

Raids are likely to be conducted to apprehend the accused as the investigation progresses. No arrests have been reported so far.
