Patna, April 28 (IANS) In a major anti-corruption operation in Patna, the Vigilance Investigation Bureau on Tuesday arrested an Assistant Registrar of Maulana Mazharul Haque Arabic and Persian University while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh.

The accused has been identified as Sanullah Khan, who was caught red-handed during the transaction.

He was allegedly demanding the bribe in exchange for renewing the affiliation of an old college.

According to the complainant, Ramanand Mahto, all required fees for the Knowledge Resource Centre had already been deposited, and a Memorandum Order (MO) had been issued.

Following this, student admissions and examinations were conducted.

Mahto stated that exams were held for 40 students at one centre and 35 at another. The practical examinations were completed, and documents were submitted to the university, but no official receipt was issued.

He alleged that despite fulfilling all formalities, the results were withheld, and a bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh was demanded to process further work.

The complainant further claimed that Sanullah Khan indicated he was acting under instructions from the Vice-Chancellor, suggesting that the work would only proceed upon payment.

Mahto also alleged that he was directed by the Vice-Chancellor to meet the Assistant Registrar.

During this period, the concerned BRC (Block Resource Centre) was reportedly locked, prompting Mahto to approach the Vigilance Department.

Shyam Babu Prasad, the DSP of Vigilance Investigation Bureau, confirmed that a complaint had been received regarding the bribe demand after examination results were withheld.

Following verification, a trap was laid, and Sanullah Khan was caught red-handed while accepting Rs 2.5 lakh.

An FIR has been registered against him, and further legal proceedings are underway.

The Vigilance team has launched a detailed investigation into the case.

Preliminary findings suggest the bribe demand may have been made at the behest of senior authorities, though officials have not yet confirmed further involvement.

Authorities are continuing with legal formalities and expanding the probe to uncover the full extent of the alleged corruption.
