Unopposed BJP wins in local body polls show Opposition’s position in Gujarat, says Deputy CM

Ahmedabad, April 14 (IANS) Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi on Tuesday said that the Bharatiya Janata Party’s unopposed victories on more than 300 seats in local body elections reflected the weakened position of opposition parties in the state, as he addressed campaign events across parts of Ahmedabad.

Sanghavi visited ward offices in Bapunagar and Sardarnagar and later addressed workers and residents at the India Colony ward office and a ‘Vikas Sankalp Sabha’ in Saijpur-Bogha.

“The BJP’s unopposed victory on more than 300 seats has proved what the condition of Congress and other parties is in Gujarat. The unwavering trust of the people is only on the ‘Lotus’,” Sanghavi said.

Referring to recent political remarks, he alleged that opposition leaders had insulted Gujaratis and called on voters to respond through the ballot.

“Those who tamper with the pride of Gujarat will not be forgiven by the people. Leaders of the Congress, which has lost more than 99 elections under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, have once again abused Gujarat and Gujaratis,” he said.

He added, “What is the fault of Gujaratis who work day and night to earn their livelihood and consider people across the country as their own family? Why are Gujarat Congress leaders silent on this insult?”

He urged voters to deliver “a fitting reply in the elections to those who have hurt Gujarat’s pride”.

Sanghavi also contrasted the current administration with past Congress rule.

“In the past, during Congress rule, Ahmedabad witnessed a dreadful situation of curfew and anarchy,” he said.

He further added, “That situation has been transformed into good governance by the BJP government led by Narendra Modi and Amit Shah.”

Highlighting law and order, he said, “Today, daughters can safely play garba till late at night, which is a result of BJP governance.”

On the occasion of Dr B.R. Ambedkar’s birth anniversary, Sanghavi referred to a recent event attended by Droupadi Murmu and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.

“For the first time in the country’s history, leaders from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes sat and dined together with the President and the Chief Minister at Lok Bhavan,” he said.

He also said that BJP workers remain available round the clock for public service.

“A BJP worker is present 24 hours a day to serve the people,” he said, adding that “opposition offices are lying vacant”.

Local party leaders, elected representatives, office-bearers and workers were present at the events.
