New Delhi, May 23 (IANS) US Ambassador Sergio Gor, highlighted the role of shared humanitarian values in strengthening bilateral ties after accompanying US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a visit to the famed humanitarian organisation Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata.

In a post on X, Gor wrote, “Joined @SecRubio in Kolkata for a visit to the Missionaries of Charity. Moments like these remind us the US-India partnership rests not only on strong policies, but also on shared values and the spirit of selfless service that transcends borders.”

Rubio’s visit to Kolkata marks the beginning of his four-day official tour of India, his first trip to the country since assuming office last year.

He landed in the city on Saturday morning and was received by senior officials upon arrival. The US Secretary of State is expected to travel across multiple Indian cities, including Agra and Jaipur, during the visit.

According to US Ambassador Sergio Gor, Rubio is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi later in the day in New Delhi. The visit comes at a time when Washington and New Delhi are seeking to deepen cooperation on strategic and economic issues amid evolving global geopolitical challenges.

Taking to social media platform X, Gor also posted, “Honoured to welcome my friend Sec Rubio to India! We have an ambitious agenda ahead, including the Quad Foreign Ministers Meeting, focussed on advancing POTUS’ vision for an even stronger US-India partnership. Looking forward to great conversations and making real progress together!”

The top US diplomat is also scheduled to hold bilateral talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Sunday. He will later attend the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday, which will bring together foreign ministers from India, the United States, Australia and Japan.

The Quad meeting is scheduled for May 26 in New Delhi, where External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, will host US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi.

Discussions are expected to focus on strengthening cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, as well as expanding collaboration in Defence, trade, energy security and regional stability amid shifting geopolitical dynamics.
