Villivakkam lake park work in Chennai picks up, completion likely by September

Chennai, May 26 (IANS) After remaining delayed for more than five years, the much-awaited Villivakkam Lake amusement park project in Chennai has gathered momentum following the removal of encroachments around Annai Sathya Nagar.

The development has raised hopes among residents of Villivakkam and surrounding neighbourhoods, with many viewing it as a major recreational addition for northwestern parts of Chennai. Authorities indicated that construction work is progressing steadily and the project is expected to be completed by September.

The transformation of the 39-acre Villivakkam Lake at Sidco Nagar was originally launched in 2018 under the Chennai Smart City Mission. The project initially focused on restoring the water body through desilting and deepening works aimed at significantly increasing water storage capacity.

The restoration was designed to strengthen flood mitigation efforts and provide better protection to nearby residential areas during periods of heavy rainfall. However, progress slowed over the years due to several obstacles, including the COVID-19 pandemic, legal proceedings before the National Green Tribunal, and disputes concerning the removal of encroachments around the lake.

The project later expanded beyond water body restoration and evolved into a large-scale recreational and tourism initiative with an estimated investment nearing Rs 50 crore, including participation from private partners.

One of the most prominent attractions planned under the redevelopment is a 250-metre glass-bottom suspension bridge. Positioned around 41 feet above the lake, the structure is expected to provide panoramic views of the restored waterbody and surrounding areas.

Safety evaluations have reportedly been carried out to regulate visitor capacity and ensure structural reliability. The upcoming amusement park will feature multiple entertainment and leisure facilities, including children’s play zones, indoor gaming spaces, an open-air music theatre, boating activities, food courts, a mini theatre, and a snow-themed attraction.

Residents believe the park could emerge as a major leisure destination because of its location near important transport links, making it accessible to people from Villivakkam, Anna Nagar, Ambattur, Avadi, Tiruvallur, and nearby areas.

Many see it as a family-oriented destination that could particularly appeal to middle-income groups. At the same time, concerns remain regarding the long-term sustainability of combining waterbody restoration with large-scale commercial and recreational activities.

Observers have stressed that regular maintenance, environmental safeguards and safety measures will be essential to ensure the project’s long-term success.
