New Delhi, June 5 (IANS) A tragic accident occurred when the wall of the Dayanand Crematorium on Lodhi Road collapsed during ongoing excavation work for a sewer line, leaving three workers trapped under the debris. One worker died on the spot, while two others sustained injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.
According to officials, the incident took place around 1:00 A.M. when workers were engaged in drain excavation work near the crematorium premises. The sudden collapse of the wall led to chaos at the site.
Eyewitness Bhagwan Das told IANS that construction work was underway when the incident occurred.
“The labourers were working when the wall suddenly collapsed. Three people were trapped under the debris. One of them died, while two others are injured and have been admitted to hospital. Police reached the spot in around 20 minutes and the victims were pulled out,” he said.
Officials from the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) confirmed that three workers were trapped under the debris after the wall caved in during pipeline-laying work. Rescue teams were immediately rushed to the site.
Authorities said JCB machines were deployed during the night to clear the debris and assist in rescue operations. Preliminary reports suggest that the workers were engaged in excavation work when the structure suddenly gave way, leading to the accident.
Police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the collapse and to assess whether any safety lapses or negligence contributed to the tragedy.
The incident comes just a day after another major construction-related accident in the region. On Thursday, at least two workers were killed and several others feared trapped after a heavy crane overturned at an under-construction flyover connecting Noida International Airport in Jewar to Faridabad.
The accident took place near Panhera Khurd in Faridabad during work on the Jewar Airport flyover, part of the Green Corridor project. Officials said the crane lost balance while lifting a girder and overturned, trapping several labourers beneath it.
Police teams, construction workers, and emergency responders carried out rescue operations.
