A seven-year-old boy and a woman have been pronounced dead after a head-on crash on the Hume Highway, south of Sydney.
A seven-year-old girl and another woman also injured in the crash this morning remain in critical conditions in hospital.
The Mazda 4WD and Holden Astra collided just before 8am in the southbound lanes of the Hume Highway, about 1km south of Picton Road, police said.
The Holden’s female driver, also aged 49, was taken to Liverpool hospital and remains there in a critical condition.
The seven-year-old girl had also been travelling in the Mazda, and was taken to the Westmead Children’s Hospital with serious head and chest injuries.
She remains in a critical condition, police advised at 11.30am AEDT.
Helicopter footage of the crash scene shows one car sliced in half.
It is understood that the Holden driver had been travelling north toward the city when she crossed a median strip and travelled into the path of oncoming traffic, colliding with the Mazda.
The Hume Highway has been closed southbound and extended delays are expected.
Drives have been advised to postpone travel or use an alternative route.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
