Kolkata, Aug 30 (IANS) At least one person was injured in a firing incident in the North Port Police Station area in north Kolkata, said the police on Sunday.

The incident took place after midnight, the police said, adding that the victim has been identified as Santosh Chowdhury and a hunt was launched for the attackers.

The person who was involved in the firing has been identified as Kartik Sonakar alias ‘Khargosh’. The initial report said the firing incident took place due to a family dispute. Investigation has revealed that Sonkar had threatened to kill the youth who was shot.

According to a police officer, after midnight, Sonkar and his associates came near PK Thakur Ghat Road. Chowdhury was already there. As soon as the miscreants saw him, they opened fire at him. Chowdhury was hit in the stomach. And, as he fell, Sonkar and his men fled the spot.

Hearing the noise, people in the area rushed to the spot. Chowdhury was rushed to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. His condition was stable, according to the police.

It is learnt that Chowdhury and Sonkar are related, and the incident was a fallout of a family dispute. However, it was not clear what led to the firing incident, but things took an ugly turn between the two during the night.

Meanwhile, the North Port Police Station officials have started a search for Sonkar. A case has been registered under multiple sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including attempt to murder. The police have also registered a case under the Arms Act, 1959.

“The incident took place shortly after midnight. The miscreants fired several rounds of bullets at the youth. He was hit in the stomach. The locals rushed him to the hospital. He is presently in a stable condition. A case has been registered against the miscreants. A search has begun to arrest them. Investigation is on,” said a senior officer of Kolkata Police.
