Queensland Parliament House provided the setting for the official curtain-raiser to the 12th International Day of Yoga, as Members of the Queensland parliament joined representatives of the Consulate General of India in Brisbane to mark the beginning of celebrations leading up to the global observance on June 21.
The event, organised by the Consulate General of India, highlighted the growing popularity of yoga as a holistic practice that supports physical health, mental wellbeing and balanced living.
This year’s International Day of Yoga is being observed under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, reflecting increasing global interest in preventive healthcare and lifestyle choices that promote wellbeing throughout life.
Parliamentarians and community representatives gathered to recognise yoga’s contribution to healthier communities and to encourage participation in the series of activities planned across Queensland in the weeks ahead.
Organisers said the theme underscores the role yoga can play in maintaining mobility, flexibility, mental resilience and overall quality of life as people age. The practice continues to be embraced by millions worldwide as a means of supporting both physical and emotional wellbeing.
The gathering also highlighted the international growth of the International Day of Yoga since the United Nations designated June 21 as the annual observance in 2014. What began as an initiative to promote awareness of yoga’s benefits has evolved into a worldwide movement celebrated through public sessions, educational programmes and community events.
Speakers noted that yoga is increasingly recognised as a valuable complement to broader health and wellness strategies, helping individuals manage stress, improve fitness and maintain an active lifestyle.
The Brisbane event marked the start of local International Day of Yoga celebrations, with additional programmes and community activities expected to take place across Queensland and other parts of Australia ahead of June 21.
The occasion reinforced the enduring appeal of yoga as one of India’s most significant contributions to global wellbeing and highlighted its continuing relevance in promoting healthier and more active lifestyles in contemporary society.
