India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has held talks with Opposition Leader Angus Taylor, underscoring the bipartisan political support underpinning the Australia-India relationship as both countries seek to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, technology and regional security, according to India’s Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
According to India’s PMO, Prime Minister Modi described the discussions as positive and forward-looking, noting that the Australia-India partnership enjoys broad support across Australia’s political spectrum. The PMO said the leaders exchanged views on strengthening economic engagement and expanding collaboration in areas of mutual strategic interest.
Reuters reported that the meeting followed a series of agreements signed during Prime Minister Modi’s visit covering defence cooperation, clean energy, critical minerals, education and emerging technologies. The news agency said the discussions reinforced the growing importance both major Australian political parties place on relations with India.
According to the Liberal Party of Australia, Angus Taylor emphasised the value of building stronger commercial, security and community links with India, describing the bilateral relationship as increasingly significant for the prosperity and stability of the Indo-Pacific. The party said both nations have substantial opportunities to expand cooperation in the years ahead.
ABC News reported that Australia’s engagement with India has become a long-term strategic priority supported by both the Government and the Opposition. The broadcaster said the relationship has continued to expand through stronger economic ties, defence cooperation and growing people-to-people connections.
According to India’s PMO, the meeting reflected a shared commitment to maintaining momentum in one of Australia’s fastest-growing international partnerships. Reuters reported that bipartisan political support is expected to provide greater confidence for businesses, investors, universities and the Indian diaspora as the two countries continue to broaden cooperation across key sectors.
