India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Melbourne on July 8 to begin the Australia leg of his three-nation Indo-Pacific tour, receiving an enthusiastic welcome ahead of a series of meetings expected to further strengthen the Australia-India strategic partnership, according to India’s Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
According to India’s PMO, Prime Minister Modi’s visit is his third official visit to Australia, underlining the growing importance both countries place on their bilateral relationship. The PMO said his programme includes talks with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, interactions with Australian business leaders and engagements with the Indian diaspora.
Reuters reported that Australia and India have significantly expanded cooperation in recent years across defence, trade, clean energy, critical minerals, education and emerging technologies. The news agency said the visit is expected to build on that momentum through a series of agreements and initiatives aimed at strengthening long-term economic and strategic ties.
According to the Consulate General of India in Melbourne, members of the Indian community gathered to welcome Prime Minister Modi, reflecting the close people-to-people links that have become a defining feature of the Australia-India relationship. The Consulate said the visit also recognises the contribution of the Indian diaspora to Australia’s economic, social and cultural life.
ABC News reported that India has become one of Australia’s fastest-growing strategic partners, with both governments placing increasing emphasis on collaboration in the Indo-Pacific and supply chain resilience. The broadcaster said the visit is expected to further reinforce cooperation across government, industry and academia.
According to India’s PMO, the visit is designed to advance cooperation across a broad range of sectors while deepening engagement between the two democracies. Reuters reported that the outcomes are expected to benefit businesses, universities and multicultural communities in both countries, reinforcing Australia’s long-term partnership with India.
