Attempted to scare me, claims Trinamool MP Mitali Bag on car vandalism

Kolkata, April 29 (IANS) Amid allegations flying thick between the ruling party and the opposition in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress MP Mitali Bag on Wednesday claimed that the attack on her in Hooghly district’s Goghat was an attempt by the BJP to “scare” her.

Bag’s car was reportedly vandalised while she was on her way to attend an election rally of the party’s national General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Monday. She sustained injuries in the incident and was later admitted to a hospital.

Speaking to reporters, Bag said: “The BJP had said that there is no democracy in Bengal. They had tried over and over again to finish the democracy here.”

“Everybody has seen the atrocities that have been committed. The way my car was vandalised, and an attempt was made to kill a woman… I could survive due to the blessings of God, the people and due to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and MP Abhishek Banerjee,” she said.

The Trinamool MP from Arambagh had come in a wheelchair to cast her vote during the second phase of polling in the state.

Expressing confidence that the high turnout in the first phase has gone in Trinamool’s favour, Bag accused the BJP of resorting to violence due to fear of defeat.

“Today, the BJP is attempting to take over Bengal through all this. Since the ground beneath their feet is slipping away, the BJP is indulging in violent politics so that people get scared and refuse to cast votes,” she said.

“They thought that by vandalising my car, they would be able to scare me,” she added.

Expressing her discontent with the Election Commission, Bag said: “Even today, many of our workers were lathi-charged.”

She accused the central agency of failing to control violence despite making “tall claims”.

She also alleged that the BJP’s ministers from other states have come to Bengal to suppress Chief Minister Banerjee.

“Everybody has the right to engage in an election campaign, but no one can do politics of violence. Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee have never spoken about violence,” Bag said.

Moreover, she further alleged that Khanakul MLA Susanta Ghosh had said that “the skin of those who are part of Trinamool Congress would be ripped off”.
