Bengal: Police search in-laws’ home of absconding aide of Abhishek Banerjee

Kolkata, June 13 (IANS) Police on Saturday searched multiple locations linked to Sumit Roy, the absconding executive assistant of Trinamool Congress general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee, including his Kolkata residence, his house in Hooghly district and his in‑laws’ home, but he remained untraceable.

Sumit’s mother‑in‑law is upset and angry with the police raid. She alleged that they were being deliberately disturbed as the privacy of the entire family was being violated.

According to a police officer, they last saw the tower location of Sumit’s mobile phone at Abhishek’s house. Based on that information, a police team reached Abhishek’s house in Kalighat in south Kolkata at around 3 a.m. on Friday. After getting no response from inside the house, the lock on the outer door was broken. However, Sumit could not be found. After the commotion in the morning, the police team from Salboni police station left Abhishek’s house at around 8 a.m.

Sumit’s in‑laws’ house is in Vivekananda Sarani in Serampore of Hooghly district. The police got information from local sources that he regularly visits his in‑laws. Sumit had visited his in‑laws’ house several times during the voting period. Based on that information, the police arrived at Sumit’s in‑laws’ house in Serampore.

Sumit’s mother‑in‑law said he had not visited in the last two or three days. The elderly woman, visibly unhappy and angry at journalists’ questions about where her son‑in‑law was, said she did not know and that the police should search properly and find him.

According to police sources, they are looking for Sumit in the context of a land‑related case. A few days ago, the police arrested Sujoy Hazra, a former MLA from Midnapore, in a land corruption case. He is still in police custody. However, it is not clear whether Sumit’s name is involved in that case or not.

Papiya Sultana, Superintendent of Police of West Midnapore, the district in which Salboni police station falls, said they arrested Sujoy Hazra first and found traces of some money with him. That money had changed hands two or three times. From that source, they got Sumit’s name. She said they had been tracking Sumit for the last two to three days. Yesterday, Sumit’s mobile tower location was found in a house in Kalighat, so they searched that house. Searches are still going on in various places for him.
