A Gulliver man died instantly after a horrific motorcycle crash on a long turn halfway up Hervey Range.
It is understood the 43-year-old motorcyclist rode into the back of a slow moving utility about noon on Saturday, with police saying speed could be a factor in the crash.
The crash closed the range for several hours as the Forensic Crash Unit began to piece together what happened.
Officer in Charge of the unit Sergeant Robert Nalder said speed had not been ruled out as the cause of the crash, with the long cornering a favourite of riders around the region.
“It appears a 43-year-old man was travelling up Hervey Range on a motorcycle and has struck the rear of a slow moving utility,” Sgt Nalder said.
“Speed is certainly one of the factors that we are looking at for the cause of the collision.
“It is a well known area for motorcyclists to use due to the cornering.
“We would hope that motorcycle riders would see what has happened here and maybe curb their ways, because that area of the road is used by farming type people and large trucks, so there are a lot of slow moving vehicles going up that way.”
Leading into the school holidays with plenty of traffic set to hit the roads around the region, Sgt Nalder said it was a timely reminder to be safe while driving or riding.
“It’s continual, we ask people to drive safely and watch out for other people and consider their driving to other road users.
Police will continue to investigate the crash and prepare a report for the coroner.
