The rich history, resilience and enduring cultural heritage of the Girmitiya community were celebrated at a special Girmit Diwas event organised by the GOPIO Queensland in Brisbane.
The programme paid tribute to the sacrifices and struggles of indentured labourers while recognising the remarkable achievements and contributions of Indo-Fijians across generations.
The Consul General of India in Brisbane Neetu Bhagotia attended the event and delivered the keynote address, highlighting the importance of preserving the history and legacy of the Girmitiya community. She also paid floral tributes as part of the commemoration ceremony.
A major highlight of the evening was the presentation of an award to Justice Davendra Pathak in recognition of his distinguished service and valuable contributions to the Fijian community.
The event was attended by local councillors, members of the Indian community and friends of India, reflecting the strong bonds shared between the Indian diaspora and the wider multicultural community in Queensland.
Organisers said Girmit Diwas serves as an important occasion to remember the courage and perseverance of indentured labourers and to celebrate the continuing contribution of the Indo-Fijian community to society, culture and public life.
