ED summons 3 cops close to arrested ex-Kolkata Police DC Biswas for questioning in syndicate case

Kolkata, June 24 (IANS) The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned three police officers close to arrested former Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner, Shantanu Sinha Biswas, for questioning in a criminal-linked syndicate case.

A senior officer of the central investigation agency said on Wednesday that among the three officers summoned for questioning, is a Sub-Inspector working in a police station in south Kolkata.

Not only that, the ED has summoned the family members of the arrested syndicate owner Biswajit Poddar alias Sona Pappu. His wife Soma and several other family members have been ordered to appear at the ED’s office this week.

Sona Pappu, a resident of Ballygunge in south Kolkata, is facing various charges including land grabbing and extortion. There is also a case against him under the Arms Act.

The ED started the investigation based on these charges. The name of businessman Joy Kamdar came up based on that case. The ED had arrested him as well in the same case. The central investigation agency conducted a search operation at the house of Shantanu Sinha Biswas on Fern Road in South Kolkata based on this case.

A day after the search, the ED summoned Shantanu and his two sons Sayantan and Manish to the CGO Complex office in Kolkata’s Salt Lake area in the Sona Pappu case. None of them were seen going to the ED office that day.

In April, the ED also summoned Shantanu for questioning as part of its investigation in the sand smuggling case. However, he did not go.

A lookout circular was also issued in his name. After avoiding summons several times, Shantanu went to the ED office. After questioning, the ED arrested him. However, Pappu was still at large.

Last month, he suddenly appeared at the CGO Complex office with his wife. He was also arrested after a long interrogation.

Currently, all three Shantanu, Sona Pappu and Joy Kamdar are in judicial custody. In the Sona Pappu case, this time the ED wants to question his wife and family members.
