Kolkata, June 24 (IANS) The police have summoned former Trinamool MLA Atin Ghosh and his daughter Priyadarshini Ghosh for questioning after they were accused of forcible seizure of property.

In the wake of the allegations, the police have summoned Atin Ghosh, who is also a former Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Deputy Mayor, and his daughter for questioning this week.

According to the police, Atin and his daughter are accused of cheating to the tune of Rs 50 lakh.

A hotel owner has alleged that his property was forcibly taken away for a small amount of money. Although the incident took place in the Pragati Maidan police station area, the complaint was later transferred to Bidhannagar North police station.

Officers of that police station are investigating the incident. However, Atin claimed on Wednesday that he has not received any police notice so far.

Trinamool leader Atin Ghosh had won from the Kashipur-Belgachia constituency in the 2021 Assembly elections. He contested from that constituency this time too. However, he lost to BJP candidate Ritesh Tiwari.

Since the change of government in the state, the police have been taking action against Trinamool Congress leaders based on complaints lodged against them. In many cases, Trinamool Congress leaders, councillors and MLAs have been arrested on charges of extortion, corruption and molestation.

This time, an FIR has been registered against Atin Ghosh and his daughter based on the complaint of the hotel owner. Charges such as land grabbing, intimidation, cheating, criminal conspiracy and others have been slapped against them.

According to the police, Atin is accused of occupying a three-storey bungalow house on two and a half kathas of land in the Metropolitan area adjacent to the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass for about 9 years.

According to sources, the current market value of the house and land is about Rs 4 crore. However, he had paid the hotel owner only Rs 50 lakh, as per the complaint.

Atin Ghosh’s daughter Priyadarshini Ghosh told a section of media persons, “No one has been able to tarnish the image of my father and smear dirt on his 50-year political career. We will not take responsibility for the allegations. This time I will file a defamation case.”

Meanwhile, state Minister for Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Agnimitra Paul said, “Earlier, there was no proper investigation, let alone a trial. A complaint has been filed, and investigation will be conducted.”
