The Governor-General hosted a special gathering at Admiralty House to honour Neale Daniher AO, the 2025 Australian of the Year, and celebrate the impact of FightMND, the organisation he co-founded to advance motor neurone disease research.
Despite his MND diagnosis, Daniher has inspired a national movement by bringing together researchers, clinicians, philanthropists, sports leaders and community supporters to push for better treatments. FightMND has already raised $25 million this year, demonstrating the strong public support behind the cause.
During her remarks, the Governor-General reflected on shared moments with Daniher, including the Big Freeze event at the MCG and community walks along Daniher Way. She acknowledged his family members Bec and Jan Daniher, his carer Nicki Stewart, and individuals living with MND who attended the ceremony.
Also recognised on the night were FightMND Chair Mike Schneider, CEO Matt Tilley, Professor Matthew Kiernan AM of NeuRA, Charles Curran AC, MC David Campbell OAM and David Hobson, as well as prominent supporters from the AFL community including Andrew Pridham AO and Time Reed.
The evening coincided with the release of Daniher’s book, The Power of Choice, which shares insights on resilience, compassion and the power of community.
