Jaipur, May 9 (IANS) A final-year MBBS student was found dead under suspicious circumstances at the New RD Hostel of Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Medical College in Jaipur on Saturday, the police said.

The student was found hanging in the stairwell area on the eighth floor of the hostel. The exact reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained.

The deceased was identified as Nitin Yadav (22), a native of Rajasthan’s Alwar district. He was scheduled to appear for a Forensic Medicine examination on Saturday.

Family members have raised questions over how an undergraduate (UG) student managed to enter a postgraduate (PG) hostel late at night.

According to police, Nitin was staying with four friends in a rented flat near the ‘20 Dukaan’ area close to Naila House in Jaipur.

SMS Police Station SHO Rajesh Sharma said Nitin had gone to the SK Menon Hostel, a UG hostel, to study with friends.

At around 2 a.m., he reportedly told his friends that he was returning to his flat. However, CCTV footage later showed him entering the New RD Hostel at approximately 2.45 a.m.

Police said he was seen in CCTV footage on the seventh floor till 2.51 a.m. and remained visible in different parts of the hostel till around 3.15 a.m.

Notably, no CCTV cameras were installed on the eighth floor, where the incident took place.

A woman security guard discovered him hanging at around 5.30 a.m. and informed the authorities.

Police reached the spot at around 6.30 a.m. along with a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team, following which the body was brought down.

No suicide note was recovered from the spot. Police seized the student’s mobile phone and laptop for investigation.

Hostel staff reportedly informed investigators that the rope used in the incident had been brought inside the hostel in his laptop bag.

The second, third and fourth floors of the hostel are occupied by male students, while female students stay on the fifth, sixth and seventh floors. The eighth floor opens towards the terrace area.

Nitin’s father, Arjun Singh, serves as a commando in the Border Security Force (BSF).

Nitin was the younger of two brothers and had been pursuing his MBBS studies in Jaipur for the past three years.

His maternal uncle, Amrit, said: “Nitin was a bright and sensible student. He had not spoken to family members for the past two days because he wanted to focus on his studies.”

Questioning the circumstances surrounding the death, he added: “He was not someone who would take such an extreme step.”

Police said further investigation into the case is underway.
