Chennai, May 24 (IANS) An atmospheric circulation prevailing over the southeast Bay of Bengal and its adjoining central parts is likely to trigger widespread rainfall activity across Tamil Nadu in the coming days, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai.

The weather system is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to several districts across the state.

According to the weather department, heavy rainfall is likely today in 10 districts — Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi and Namakkal.

The RMC said rainfall activity is expected to intensify further over the next few days due to the prevailing weather conditions.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast in several districts, including Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruppur, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Perambalur, Tiruchy, Namakkal, Karur, Dindigul, Theni and Madurai. The same pattern is expected to continue the following day, with many of these districts likely to witness intense rainfall.

Officials have advised people living in vulnerable and low-lying regions to remain cautious as heavy downpours could lead to localised flooding and disruption in normal life.

The weather department also stated that on May 26, isolated heavy rainfall is likely over the hilly regions of Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts, along with Nilgiris, Theni, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari districts.

Despite the expected rain activity, there is unlikely to be any significant change in maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, according to the weather department.

Temperatures are expected to remain close to normal levels.

For Chennai, the forecast predicts a partly cloudy sky with light to moderate rain likely during the evening or night hours.

Intermittent showers and cloud cover are expected to bring relatively pleasant weather conditions to the city.

Authorities have urged residents, particularly in hilly and waterlogging-prone areas, to monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions.
