Kidney racket case: Recipient’s condition deteriorates, doctors advise transfer to specialised transplant centre

Kanpur, April 1 (IANS) The condition of a woman who underwent an alleged illegal kidney transplant in UP’s Kanpur has deteriorated, prompting doctors to recommend her immediate transfer to a specialised and authorised transplant facility for advanced care and monitoring.

Chief Medical Superintendent (CMS) Saurabh Agrawal told IANS that the patient was examined by a team of nephrologists and urologists, who flagged several alarming health indicators. “Her blood pressure is rising, urine output is below standard levels, and creatinine values have increased. Haemoglobin has suddenly dropped to around 5.5–6, and total counts have also risen, with more than 90 per cent polymorphs, indicating a likely infection,” he said.

He further noted that there are also signs of possible graft rejection, a serious complication that can arise after a kidney transplant. “In this situation, to protect both the patient and the transplanted kidney, it is necessary to transfer her to a specialised or well-equipped hospital that is already approved for kidney transplants and can provide the required monitoring and treatment,” Agrawal said.

Emphasising the criticality of the situation, he added: “It is essential that the patient’s life is saved and that the transplanted kidney is also preserved.”

Highlighting the stringent norms governing organ transplantation, the CMS underlined that kidney transplants cannot be conducted without proper authorisation and infrastructure. “There is an entire government authorisation process for kidney transplants. Such facilities must meet certain standards, including a urologist surgical team, a nephrologist team, specialist nursing staff, and an isolation facility,” he said.

“All these requirements need to be in place for the procedure because at any time during the transplant, complications can occur,” he added.

Meanwhile, the police have intensified their investigation into the illegal transplant racket.

DCP S.M. Qasim Abdi told IANS: “Several individuals were arrested on Tuesday -six people in total. Some names have come to light, and our police have been continuously investigating. A team appointed by the CMO is also conducting inquiries. We are making every effort to gather information. Additional names have surfaced, and investigations are ongoing.”

The donor, who identified himself as a second-year MBA student, alleged that he was lured into the deal under false assurances. He said he accepted the offer due to financial distress as he needed to pay his college fees.

The sensational illegal kidney transplant racket was unearthed in the Kalyanpur area of Kanpur Nagar, putting the healthcare system and local administration under intense scrutiny.

According to preliminary investigations, illegal transplants and organ trafficking activities were allegedly being carried out at Medlife Hospital in Ambedkar Puram. Police detained four to five individuals, including hospital operators, brokers, and other suspects, for questioning following a tip-off.
