Leh, May 27 (IANS) Ladakh Lt Governor V.K. Saxena on Wednesday chaired a comprehensive review meeting to assess incidents of drug abuse in the union territory and take remedial measures.

The L-G said on X, “Amid growing concerns around drug abuse in Ladakh, today chaired a comprehensive review meeting with senior govt officials, medical experts, civil society, religious organisations and NGOs, to assess the situation and remedial measures to curb this menace.”

The L-G said he has directed a series of proactive steps, including a massive crackdown to eliminate drug cartels, random search of vehicles, including local taxis, and strict vigil at Ladakh’s entry points like Zoji La and Sarchu. He has also called for surveillance around hotspots, like schools, colleges and tourist places, among others.

“Directed to establish “112” as an integrated helpline for families & patients, with a dedicated team ensuring transport & rehabilitation through coordinated care. An MoU will be signed with Mahabodhi Karuna Charitable Hospital to enable meditation & retreat-based healing sessions under psychiatric supervision, adding to holistic rehabilitation facilities,” he said in the post.

L-G Saxena said that the drug menace is a grave threat to youth and society. “Besides, action against drug traffickers, focus must be given on counselling, treatment and rehabilitation of the victims, with a human approach. We must act collectively, to build a drug‑free Ladakh,” he further added.

The region has historically been free of the drug menace, but over the last few years, there have been reports about drug abuse in some pockets of the union territory.

The police have increased surveillance at the entry of psychotropic substances into the region. The timely concern is expected to ensure that Ladakh remains free of the scourge as it continues to be the most sought-after destination for visitors looking for solace far away from the hustle and bustle of overcrowded cities and towns.

The rustic landscape with its spiritually oriented population is otherwise the most unlikely place for people to suffer depression and deprivation, but, despite all its geographical barriers, the region cannot be expected to be completely insulated from the menace affecting the young generation elsewhere.
