Maha Cabinet approves doubling subsidy under Pink E Rikshaw scheme

Mumbai, July 14 (IANS) In a major push towards women’s financial independence and entrepreneurship, the Maharashtra government on Tuesday announced a significant expansion and restructuring of its flagship Pink E-Rickshaw Scheme.

The State Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis approved a series of key enhancements designed to drastically lower the financial barriers for women looking to build sustainable livelihoods.

Under the revamped scheme, the state government has doubled its financial subsidy from 20 per cent to 40 per cent of the total vehicle cost, making the purchase of a Pink E-Rickshaw significantly more affordable for incoming applicants, said the release issued by the office of Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare after Tuesday’s cabinet meeting.

In a major relief move, women who are existing beneficiaries and have already received their vehicles will also see their government subsidy retroactively increased from 20 per cent to 40 per cent. This adjustment will directly reduce their remaining outstanding loan burdens.

Beneficiaries are required to contribute a minimum of only 10 per cent as self-financing. The remaining balance can be covered through an interest-free Partial Deferred Payment Facility provided directly by the supplier company, or via approved loans from nationalised, private, urban cooperative, or district central cooperative banks.

Currently active in eight districts, the scheme has officially received the green light to expand to additional districts across Maharashtra. Furthermore, the minister for Women and Child Development has been authorised to reallocate beneficiary targets district-wise to ensure a fair and equitable rollout.

To ensure transparency and speed, the subsidy distribution process has been centralised through the Office of the Commissioner, Women and Child Development in Pune.

The Cabinet has also granted administrative flexibility to the Minister for Women and Child Development to modify the operational framework as needed to tackle future logistical challenges.

The department officials emphasised that these updates represent a critical step forward in generating sustainable, self-reliant employment for women, empowering them to become active contributors to the state’s economic growth.
