A MAN has died after he was hit by two cars on the M1, which caused 20km of traffic gridlock in southbound lanes this morning.
At around 6.20am the man, believed to be in his 60s, was struck by two vehicles after he walked onto southbound lanes of the highway.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Traffic was banked up by more than 20km, causing significant delays to peak hour traffic, with gridlock back to Pimpama.
The delays lasted for hours with traffic still jammed by 11am. The congestion has since eased.
Police urged people to avoid the area.
The two drivers of the vehicles were transported to Gold Coast University with non-life-threatening injuries.
The right lane was closed after the crash which happened between the Smith Street Motorway and Gold Coast Highway exits.
