Dantewada/Gadchiroli, Aug 3 (IANS) A man allegedly linked to Maoist activities has been arrested in connection with the display of banners and posters attributed to the banned organisation in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district, a statement of the Chhattisgarh police said on Monday.

Ishwar Rao, son of the late S Ramlu and a resident of Kirandul, Dantewada district, was arrested by police in Ahmedabad on July 27 and subsequently taken into police remand.

The case originated when banners and posters attributed to Maoists were found displayed within the jurisdiction of the Pipli (Burgi) Police Station in Gadchiroli.

Following the discovery, police registered a case under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 353(1)(B), 189(2), 190, 61(2) and 3(5). Additional charges were invoked under Section 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act and Sections 10, 13, 20 and 39 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

An investigation was promptly initiated. During the course of the probe, two other accused persons were arrested. The trail subsequently led investigators to Ishwar Rao, who was apprehended in Ahmedabad.

After his arrest, he was remanded to police custody to facilitate further questioning and evidence collection.

On July 30, a team from the Gadchiroli Police visited Kirandul in Dantewada district to verify and carry out a search of the accused’s residence. The team followed all necessary legal procedures during the operation, ensuring compliance with established protocols.

Chhattisgarh police officials said that the investigation remains ongoing, with efforts focused on uncovering the full extent of the network involved in the display of the prohibited materials and any related activities.

The recovery of the banners and posters had raised concerns about attempts to spread Maoist propaganda in the region, prompting authorities to act swiftly under the stringent provisions of the UAPA and other applicable laws.

Police indicated that further details would be shared as the investigation progresses and additional leads are examined. The case underscores the continued vigilance of security forces in areas historically affected by Maoists.
