Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu), June 21 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Sunday inaugurated the 12th International Yoga Day celebrations at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) in Coimbatore, joining hundreds of students, faculty members and members of the public in marking the global observance dedicated to physical and mental well-being.

The event, organised as part of the nationwide International Yoga Day programme, witnessed enthusiastic participation from people across different age groups.

The celebrations featured mass yoga demonstrations, awareness sessions and interactive activities aimed at highlighting the benefits of yoga in daily life.

Addressing the gathering, Governor Arlekar underscored the growing relevance of yoga in modern society and stressed that it should not be viewed merely as a form of physical exercise but as a comprehensive way of life. He said yoga offers a holistic approach to health by promoting harmony between the body, mind and spirit, helping individuals lead healthier and more balanced lives.

The Governor emphasised the need to create greater awareness about yoga across Tamil Nadu and encouraged educational institutions, community organisations and local bodies to actively promote its practice. He noted that regular yoga practice could play a significant role in improving overall health, reducing stress and enhancing mental resilience in an increasingly fast-paced world.

Highlighting this year’s theme, he said the objective of the celebrations extended beyond increasing lifespan and focused equally on improving “healthspan” — the period of life spent in good health. He observed that yoga could contribute significantly to this goal by encouraging preventive healthcare and fostering physical fitness and emotional well-being.

Students and faculty members of TNAU participated in a series of yoga sessions conducted by trained instructors. The programme also showcased various yoga postures and breathing techniques designed to improve flexibility, concentration and overall wellness.

Participants described the event as an opportunity to reconnect with India’s ancient wellness tradition while reinforcing the importance of healthy living. The university campus provided an ideal setting for the celebration, with organisers emphasising the connection between physical well-being, environmental awareness and sustainable lifestyles. The International Yoga Day celebration at TNAU concluded with a renewed call for individuals to integrate yoga into their daily routines, reflecting the broader national effort to promote healthier and more mindful living through the timeless practice.
