TN plans global push for Sivakasi firecrackers, targets Chinese market dominance

Chennai, June 14 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu government is preparing a comprehensive policy to transform the Sivakasi fireworks industry into a major global exporter, with a special focus on helping local manufacturers compete with Chinese products in international markets.

Industries Minister S. Keerthana said the initiative would combine export promotion, worker safety, infrastructure development and regulatory reforms to strengthen one of the state’s most important traditional industries.

The minister, while speaking to reporters, said Sivakasi, located in Virudhunagar district, continues to be the backbone of India’s fireworks sector, accounting for nearly 90 per cent of the country’s firecracker production. The industry generates an annual business turnover exceeding Rs 6,000 crore and provides livelihoods to thousands of workers directly and indirectly.

However, the sector has faced a series of challenges in recent years, including stricter regulations, safety concerns, changing market conditions and increasing competition.

Keerthana said the next major milestone for the industry would be to expand its footprint in overseas markets. The proposed policy aims to increase exports significantly and position Sivakasi as a competitive global brand in the fireworks sector.

“The objective is not only to strengthen exports but also to ensure that Sivakasi manufacturers can effectively compete with Chinese producers in international markets,” she said, adding that the move could create fresh economic opportunities for Virudhunagar district and enhance the global visibility of its products.

As part of the initiative, the government plans to establish an expert committee to recommend measures for improving factory safety and preventing industrial accidents. The committee will also suggest ways to modernise production processes and align the industry with international standards.

The Minister said special emphasis would be placed on encouraging the production of green crackers and ensuring compliance with environmental and import regulations followed by various countries. Such measures, she noted, would improve the acceptability of Sivakasi products in foreign markets.

To support exports, the government is also planning to upgrade logistics and transportation infrastructure, enabling the safe movement of firecrackers through Chennai and Thoothukudi ports. Improved export facilities are expected to reduce logistical challenges faced by manufacturers.

Keerthana added that while a handful of large companies currently dominate exports, the new policy would create opportunities for small and micro-scale units to enter international markets.

Alongside export expansion, the government would continue prioritising worker welfare and safety, ensuring sustainable growth for the industry while enhancing the global standing of Sivakasi and Virudhunagar district.
