Community organisations, cultural associations and religious representatives from across Victoria came together at the AICCT Hall in Melbourne for a special interaction with Consul General Anish Rajan, organised by the Federation of Indian Associations of Victoria (FIAV) and the Federation of Indian Music Dance Victoria (FIMDV).
The gathering brought together leaders from a wide range of Indian community organisations to discuss community engagement, cultural initiatives and greater collaboration within the Indian diaspora in Victoria.
During the programme, the Consul General acknowledged the contribution of the AICCT Trust in establishing an Indian Community Centre in Melbourne and praised the Museum India initiative led by Dr Dinesh Parekh for its role in preserving and promoting Indian heritage overseas.
FIAV Chair Vasan Srinivasan was recognised for promoting inclusiveness and cooperation among community organisations representing cultural, social and religious sectors.
Addressing the gathering, Srinivasan spoke about the proposed “Little India Precinct” project in Docklands and said FIAV and FIMDV were working closely with the City of Melbourne to support the initiative. He also acknowledged the support of Nick Reece and Roshena Campbell for the project.
The event also recognised the role of Indian media organisations in supporting multicultural initiatives, with representatives from SBS Hindi, South Asia Times and Australia Today in attendance.
Guests were served a traditional South Indian vegetarian dinner prepared by Sri Anandha Bhavan, while Aparna Kumar from the Bihar Jharkhand Society of Melbourne delivered the vote of thanks.
Organisers said the gathering reflected the growing contribution of the Indian community towards strengthening cultural and people-to-people ties between India and Australia.
