A community yoga session organised by the High Commission of India in partnership with BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir has marked the beginning of celebrations leading up to the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026.
The event attracted enthusiastic participation from members of the Indian community and yoga practitioners, reflecting the growing popularity of yoga as a pathway to physical fitness, mental wellness and holistic living.
Held as a curtain-raiser to the annual global observance on June 21, the session showcased the enduring relevance of yoga and its ability to promote balance, harmony and healthy lifestyles across communities.
Participants took part in a range of yoga practices and breathing exercises, highlighting the benefits of the ancient Indian discipline for people of all ages and backgrounds.
Organisers said the programme was designed to raise awareness about the upcoming International Day of Yoga while encouraging greater community engagement with yoga and wellness activities.
The event also underscored yoga’s role as a bridge between cultures, bringing together people in a shared pursuit of health and well-being.
Since its adoption by the United Nations in 2014 following India’s proposal, the International Day of Yoga has evolved into a worldwide movement celebrated across continents. Australia has consistently witnessed strong participation in yoga-related events, particularly among multicultural communities.
The Canberra session reinforced the message that yoga is not merely a form of exercise but a way of life that contributes to physical health, mental resilience and social harmony.
Further activities are expected to be held across Australia in the lead-up to International Day of Yoga 2026, with community organisations, yoga groups and supporters joining celebrations of India’s ancient gift to the world.
