FIRE crews have started building containment lines around a fire burning out of control at Millstream.
The blaze started at 12.40pm yesterday afternoon on Glen Gordon Station after a rubbish burn got out of control.
Thirty-one rural fire fighters and 13 vehicles have been called to the Glen Gordon Rd property to help fight the fire but no homes were under threat.
Innisfail rural fire service area acting inspector and incident controller Peter Ruddick said 150 hectares of the station property had been burnt and the fire was heading in a northerly direction.
“We’ve actually got a dozer and grader that are creating containment lines for the firefighters to backburn against and that work started at 6am this morning,” he said.
“It was started by landholders burning their rubbish dump and it’s got away on them and under the breezes at the time it has burnt further off into their land.”
Acting inspector Ruddick said the area received about 6mm of rain last night which he hoped would slow down the fire’s progress.
He reminded Far North residents the bushfire season was still underway and property holders who wished to burn rubbish must have a fire permit for burns greater than 2 sq m in size.
The permits are free from local fire wardens.
