Representatives of the Western Australia Kannada Sangha (WAKS) have met with City of Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin and council officials to explore opportunities for collaboration aimed at supporting community initiatives and strengthening multicultural engagement across the region.
The discussions focused on building partnerships that can enhance community participation, support cultural organisations and create new opportunities for residents from diverse backgrounds to engage in civic and community life.
WAKS described the meeting as a positive step towards fostering stronger relationships between local government and multicultural community organisations, highlighting the important role such partnerships play in promoting inclusion and social cohesion.
As one of Western Australia’s active Indian community organisations, WAKS has been instrumental in preserving and promoting Kannada language, culture and heritage while encouraging broader participation in multicultural activities. Through cultural festivals, educational programmes and community events, the organisation has helped strengthen connections among Indian Australians and the wider community.
The meeting also reflected the growing recognition by local governments of the contribution multicultural organisations make to Australia’s social fabric. Community groups such as WAKS not only preserve cultural traditions but also serve as important bridges that connect communities, encourage volunteerism and support social inclusion.
Mayor Mark Irwin and the City of Stirling team discussed avenues for future cooperation that could benefit local residents and strengthen engagement between community organisations and civic institutions.
WAKS representatives welcomed the opportunity to share their vision for community development and multicultural participation, expressing appreciation for the council’s openness to collaboration and support for grassroots initiatives.
The organisation said it looks forward to continuing its engagement with the City of Stirling and working together on projects that celebrate diversity, encourage community participation and contribute to a stronger and more inclusive Western Australia.
The meeting underscores the increasing role that Indian-Australian community organisations are playing in shaping multicultural Australia and building partnerships that benefit both their members and the wider community.
